Prosodic hierarchy and spectral realization of vowels in French

چکیده
The aim of this study is to relate spectral realization of vowels and prosodic hierarchy in continuous speech. The IRISA speech alignment system is used and formant values of oral vowels are automatically measured in a total of 500,000 segments from around 30 hours of journalistic broadcast speech in French. The link between the duration of vowels and their spectral realization (through their formant values) has been validated for a long time since Lindblom (1963), i.e. the longer the vowels the more hyperarticulated they are. Similarly, the relation between prosodic constituents of different levels (the prosodic hierarchy) and the duration of phonemes close to these boundaries has been demonstrated (for French, Fougeron 2001; Tabain 2003ab). In this study we show that the level of prosodic constituent influences the spectral realization of vowels. Although significant differences can't be established for all levels and phonemes, we observe a general prosodic hierarchy (from syllable to word, then accentual phrase and finally intonational phrase) based on spectral measurement results, showing that the higher a vowel is in the prosodic structure of French, the more hyperarticulated it is.

Impact of Prosodic Position on Vocalic Space in German and French
The relation between prosodic constituents of different levels (the prosodic hierarchy) and the realization of phonemes is investigated in French and German broadcast speech. Four levels of prosodic categories are defined and the boundaries are automatically derived using syntactic chunking and forced alignment. We show that the higher a vowel position within the prosodic structure, the more st...
متن کاملProsodic Characteristics of Read and Spontaneous Speech in French
This study compares the read and spontaneous speech prosodic characteristics of two relatively small corpora in French (about 3 minute’s length). Acoustic data such as syllabic rate, number of effective stressed syllable vs. theoretical prediction, prosodic hierarchy and realization of melodic contours are compared for both styles. The predicting power of two theoretical approaches, autosegment...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملPre-glottal vowels in Shanghai Chinese
This study examines the acoustic realization of two complementary sets of vowels in Shanghai Chinese: One appearing in open syllables only (OSVs) and the other in closed syllables with a glottal coda (PGVs). Two factors consonant onset and prominence level were controlled to test the null hypothesis that PGVs are reduced realization of the OSVs due to their short duration. Results showed spectr...
متن کاملVowel reduction in conversational speech in French: The role of lexical factors
In this study we investigate vowel reduction and the role of some lexical factors in the production of vowels extracted from a corpus of French conversations. Vowel durations and spectral quality are examined with respect to 1. their interaction in the corpus, 2. the position of vowels in words, and 3. word frequency and word category. The analyses are conducted on vowels produced by 16 speaker...
